Veneda Madison Corum

Veneda Madison Corum, age 95, of Madisonville, KY passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Baptist Health, Madisonville, KY. Ms. Corum was born on May 22, 1922 in Hopkins County, KY to the late William Love “LW” Madison and Etta Belle Oakley Madison. She was a retired teacher having taught in the Jefferson County School District from 1950-1980 and having written curriculum at the board level. Additionally, she taught classes at the Madisonville Community College, summer classes at Eastern Kentucky University and a Creative Writing class at Berea College. Following her retirement with the Jefferson County School District, she moved back to Madisonville and introduced the J.T.P.A. (adult education) program in Hopkins County in the 1980s.



She loved teaching school and “lifelong learning”, something she strived to instill in others. She also personally strived in “lifelong learning” by acquiring many educational degrees including an ED, BSL, BU, AA, GE and MED from the University of Louisville. She worked with many students to prepare them to further their education. Many of the students she encouraged she would enjoy seeing in her walks for her health in the Parkway Plaza Mall, a life choice she enjoyed up until a week prior to her death. Ms. Corum attended the First United Methodist Church where she taught the Susanna Wesley Class for several years.



Ms. Corum is survived by her niece ~ Jenny Beshear Sewell, Dawson Springs, KY, two nephews ~ Dennis E. Madison of Kevil, KY, and Dallas W. Buchanan of Byrnes Hill, MO; great nieces ~ Eva Jo Gallo of Madisonville, KY, Marilyn Niswonger of St. Louis, MO, and several other great nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters ~ Liza Madison, Vata Madison, Lena Buchanan, Vera Drake and Virginia Beshear, brothers ~ Clarence Madison and David Madison.



The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to her two caregivers, Kathy Sigler and Charles Cunningham, who significantly added to her quality of life in the past few years.



Visitation for Ms. Veneda M. Corum will be Sunday, April 22, 2018 from 12:00 PM until her funeral service at 2:00 PM at Beshear Funeral Home, Dawson Springs, KY. Elder Jeff Winfrey will officiate at the funeral service and Rev. Shelley Caulder, Jr. will officiate the graveside service. Burial will follow at the Olive Branch Cemetery.
